One dead and 16 injured after car driven into crowd at Berlin Pride event

One woman has been killed and 16 other people injured after a car was driven into a crowd at a Berlin Pride event on Saturday night.

Police have launched a large-scale manhunt across the German capital for the suspect, who remains at large.

What happened?

The incident occurred at around 22:00 local time (20:00 GMT), when police received reports that a white vehicle had driven into crowds attending a Pride event in Berlin.

Hundreds of thousands of people had gathered in Tiergarten park, near the Brandenburg Gate, for the city’s annual Christopher Street Day celebrations.

Police have also said that several people suffered stab wounds during the incident.

Shortly after the attack, organisers cancelled the event, projecting the word “Evacuation” onto a large screen and urging attendees to leave the area.

At around 01:00 local time, police confirmed that one woman had died and 16 other people had been injured.

A short time later, officers said they had found the vehicle believed to have been used in the attack after it crashed into a tree.

At approximately 03:30, Berlin Police said on X that they had identified a suspect with alleged Islamist links. No arrests have been made and investigators have not announced a motive.

The search has since been expanded across the city, with thousands of officers, including police from neighbouring German states, taking part in the operation.

Who is the suspect?

Police have identified the suspect as Abdul B., 21.

His full surname has not been released in accordance with German privacy laws, which generally prohibit identifying suspects before they have been formally charged.

Investigators say the suspect is known to have connections to Islamist circles and is believed to be linked to the abandoned vehicle recovered in Tiergarten.

Police have also warned that one or more people may have fled from the vehicle, meaning additional suspects could still be outstanding.

Authorities have appealed for information from the public but warned people not to approach the suspect, who is considered armed and dangerous.

At the time of the incident, Abdul B. was believed to have been wearing a black hooded top and white trousers.

Where did the attack happen?

The attack took place in Berlin’s Tiergarten park, close to the Brandenburg Gate.

Christopher Street Day, one of Europe’s largest Pride events, saw large crowds and numerous floats move through central Berlin before passing through Tiergarten, alongside the Victory Column and towards the Brandenburg Gate.

Berlin Police said people were struck on Ahornsteig, a long, tree-lined path that runs through the park.
